Voopoo X217 UK Design and Build Quality
There’s no question about the build quality of the Voopoo X217 mod. It's very comfortable to hold in your hand, has an oval-shaped by symmetrical shape with a front-facing screen and a centred 510 pin. The 1.3" screen is on the larger side and is bright enough to see even when outdoors. The full-colour screen comes with pre-programmed backgrounds that include the default black one.
The LED screen doesn’t offer many options but just enough to ensure you have an excellent vaping experience.
The buttons on the mod are sturdy and firm. There's no button rattle, and the 510 pin works perfectly without any issues with any atomiser you choose. The mode has dual removable batteries. The charging rate is commendable though we recommend using the battery charger for the rechargeable batteries you buy.
Features and Functions
The Voopoo X217 packs plenty of features. Top of the list of features is the power mode, voltage mode, watt curve mode, and the temp control mode for the Ni200, Ti SS and Ni80. There's no TCR mode, but the TCR is adjustable in each of the preset modes, although the range is limited.
The X217 features an improved menu system. It also has a bigger screen that is easier to navigate compared to the older GENE chipped mods. One unique feature that the mod has is the ability to auto-set the wattage on a new coil.
The performance of the mod varies depending on the wattage range you select. It's also essential to keep in mind that the performance also depends on the type of coil and e-liquid use. The below assessment is based on having all factors constant.
60 to 90W
right from the beginning, you can tell that the device is flavour and vapour-oriented. Within the 60 to 90W range, the device has fairly good flavour production with intense vapour output with the AF closed. The performance is even better when you increase the wattage to 70W then to 80W. At 90W, the vape gets warm with a tremendous amount of vapour and satisfying clouds of vapour for cloud chasers.
95 to 120W
In this range, the mod does some of its best work, especially for vapers that like vaping at such high wattages. For most, this will be uncomfortable, but for those that prefer such intense wattage outputs, the device still puts out an admirable performance.
With so many features and a larger screen, battery life has to be at the top of your concerns. The device is powered by two 21700 batteries. Fully charged, the batteries can deliver about 1 ½ days of vape time which is quite impressive. If you prefer the 20700 batteries, the vape time drops to almost a day, while the 18650 batteries will give you about five hours of vape time.
The clock is the most iconic feature on the X217. It's almost impossible not to talk about it. At first, it looks like a purely aesthetic addition, but you will be surprised at how many times you will find yourself looking at it when you need to check the time.
Menu and Navigation
The Voopoo X217 mod is not difficult to work with. However, it works a bit differently than other mods, which might be confusing to first-time users. If you haven’t used a similar device before, the user manual provides you with valuable information that will help you get the mod up and running.
The first task is turning the device on and off. To turn the device on, press the fire button five times in rapid succession. The home screen, which has a nice layout, will light up. It has two separate indicators in the top left corner. The voltage/wattage and temperature take up the middle of the screen. At the bottom is puff counter, puff timer, atomiser resistance and you have a fourth parameter that changes depending on the mode you select.
In most mods, pressing the fire button three times will get you into the menu. But in the X217, this switches between wattage mode, temperature control and also gets you into the function.
To access the settings menu, press the ‘-‘ and ‘+’ buttons simultaneously. From the menu, you should be able to access multiple settings, including locking the adjustment buttons, setting the clock that shows up as the screen saver, adjusting the brightness, changing the colour of the LED strip or turning it off, selecting the wallpaper, setting how many minutes the screen saver remains active. You can also check the firmware version, among other things.
For the more important stuff like temperature control or setting the TCR, press the adjustment buttons simultaneously in either power mode or temperature control, and the device will go into the mode menu.
In Wattage Mode, the menu allows you to choose between Standard, Pulse1 and Pulse2 modes. The latter two let users vape at higher wattages without accidentally ruining their coils. You can also customise up to five memory modes through an intuitive power curves interface or switch to voltage mode, which is a great plus.
In Temperature Control, you have the option of selecting one of the three supported materials (titanium, nickel and stainless steel. Set the TCR for your preferred material. You can also customise one of the five memory modes. You can also set the initial power output for temp control, choose whether you want to display the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit and adjust the resistance of the coils.
It's an advanced menu with loads of features that allow you to customise your vaping experience however you want. Once you get used to the navigation, you should have an easier time using the mods.
Power Mode Performance
The device does an excellent job in this range, achieving a max wattage of 194. Although this also depends on the type of batteries you use. The device also has a commendable amp limit which is good enough, and the volt limit is about 7.574, which is right in line with the 7.5-volt rating.
The mod adjusts in 1-watt increments ensuring you can hit your preferred spots faster than the much slower 0.1-watt increments.
The mod holds up quite well during the power mode. It doesn’t get hot and is quite accurate, particularly over 100 watts.
In power mode, the device has two preheat options. Boost1 and Boost2. Both options pulse the power at slightly higher intervals which saves on preheating times. There’s also the watt curve mode which is an excellent option as well.
Other Mods in the Same Class as the Voopoo X217
In case you’re wondering if there are other fish in the sea that can compare to the Voopoo X217, there are several options that might make a great alternative depending on what you’re looking for.
The Voopoo Drag 2
The Drag 2 is a wildly successful mod from Voopoo. It has a great collection of features that include the same form factor with two removable side panels like the original Drag. But it is smaller than the original.
It is still a dual 18650 device that uses the previous version of the Gene.Fit chip, so it has a higher output of about 177W. It is also a little more accurate than the X217. There are several vaping outputs you can try out that improve the cloud size, extend battery life and flavour quality.
GeekVape Aegis Legend
The Aegis Legend is a legendary box mod with a dual 18650 battery setup. It has a near-indestructible outer chassis composes of silicone, zinc and stainless steel alloys. The legend has a 200W capacity and has an AS chipset, which means you can vape in wattage mode, temperature control, curve mode and bypass mode.
Other than having an extended range of fancy features, the Aegis Legend is also dustproof, shock-resistant and waterproof, courtesy of its leather-wrapped back panel and a silicone seal.
