What is a Vape Coil?

Vape coils are what make mods or e-cigarettes tick. They are the reason behind the clouds of vapour and flavour.

There are several factors that determine the functionality of the coil among them the number of wire wraps, the gauge and the type of wire used in the coil.

Why not view our: premade vape coils, smok coils, aspire coils, uwell crown 2 coils.

Low resistance coils produce warm, thick clouds while high resistant varieties produce a cooler vape. Despite the important role they play, vape coils have a fairly simple mechanism. They comprise coiled wire and in some types, there can also be a piece of mesh and some wicking material. Each of the components used to make the coil can be tweaked to enhance different vaping experiences.

Types of Vape Coils

Vape coils vary. They are designed to offer different performances depending on the preference of the user.

Some of the different types of vape coils to select from include:

  • Ceramic coil – ceramic vape coils are best known for their smooth draw because of the porous nature of ceramic that allows air to pass through. Ceramic coils bring out the flavour best and they tolerate high wattage so they are perfect for high-powered mods. Some vapers also attest that ceramic coils have a longer lifespan and do a better job of preventing dry hits.
  • Stainless steel coils – these types of coils come in different grades of stainless steel. The most preferred is grade 430 stainless steel because of its magnetic properties and durability. Stainless steel coils are versatile and can be used in a vast temperature range. A stainless steel coil can last up to 25 years when you take good care of it.
  • Titanium coils – Titanium coils are more expensive than their stainless steel counterparts because of the soft and malleable nature of the material. Titanium coils provide a crisp and clean taste when vaping which is why they continue to be popular despite the higher price tag. However, there are some safety concerns with titanium so vapers opting for titanium coils should practice a lot of caution when using the coils.
  • Kanthal coil – these coils are made from a mixture of aluminium, chromium and iron. They are popular in pre-made and homemade coils. Kanthal ramps up quickly and produces thick clouds but can only be used in wattage mode. The material holds its shape nicely and is easy to work with.
  • Nickel coils – the number of nickel coils is confusing. The best and most recommended is the Ni200 which has a composition of 99.6% nickel alloy. Most temperature control mods prefer nickel coils because of their low resistance. While nickel coils have numerous benefits, they shouldn’t be dry-fired for too long and they don’t fare well with variable wattage or variable voltage kits.

Choosing the right type and material for your vape coil is critical in helping you meet your vaping expectations. The different materials have different performances and offer different results to vapers.

How often do you need to replace vape coils?

Generally speaking, your vape coil should last between one to four weeks. This estimate is based on an average of 10ml of e-liquid a day, with a wattage range of between 50 and 80W. This is, however, dependent on several factors listed below.

Factors that influence how long a vape coil will last

  • Frequency of use - The more you vape, the more quickly your coil will burn out. Try to pace yourself if you want to preserve your coils for longer.
  • Juice quality - Juice with high PG content (Propylene Glycol) tends to clog up coils more easily than juice with a high VG (Vegetable Glycerin) content. A coil will typically last longer if it doesn't get clogged up as quickly. But some people enjoy the stronger throat hit and flavour of e-liquid with a higher PG content.
  • Device and wattage settings - You need to match your device and coil with the right wattage setting for optimal performance. Using a wattage that is too low will not heat the liquid enough to produce vapour, and using a wattage that is too high can burn out your coil in no time at all!

Signs that it's time for a replacement:

There are several signs that will tell you when it's time for a new coil.

The first sign is if your vape starts tasting burnt or if the vapour gets really hot and harsh on your throat.

Another sign is if your juice doesn't taste as good as it usually does or if there is less vapour production than normal.

You may also notice that your vape pen battery lasts shorter before needing recharging at all times - this happens because vaping with a bad coil requires more power output which drains batteries much faster than usual.

The amount of e-liquid also plays a role in how good you are at maintaining and cleaning your tank.

What to consider when choosing vape coils

As with anything technical, the most important thing to remember is that there's no such thing as a "best" coil. Even the best coils can fall short if they're not properly constructed or matched to the device and juice you're using.

There are many variables in a vape coil system, but here are some of the most important considerations:

Lumen output

This is measured in wattage and doesn't tell you how much vapour your coil produces. A coil that produces 1,200 watts might produce more than a coil producing 200 watts.

Vapour production

This goes hand-in-hand with lumen output. If a coil generates more heat than it can handle, it will produce too much vapour, burning your battery and even damaging your device over time. That's why it's important to choose coils based on their ability to deliver high heat without burning out your device or causing problems with its safety features.

Wattage range

Just because a manufacturer lists its coils as producing up to 1,200 watts doesn't mean they'll work for everyone or produce enough vapour for everyone who uses them.

Price

The most important factor in the selection of coils is quality price. At the same price, the best coils will be different in performance. The best vape coil will be the one that gives you the best flavour.

Repairing vape coils

If you want to save some money instead of buying new coils for your vape tank, you can repair them instead. This is a great way to get more life out of an old coil, and it’s simple too!

You can replace individual parts of the coil with ease, including:

  • Wicking material – This is usually cotton or silica. It absorbs liquid from your tank so that it can be heated and vaporized.
  • Coil wire – This is wrapped around a wick to create a heating element when current passes through it.
  • Tube – The tube carries vapour from the atomizer head up to your mouthpiece. The tube is usually made of glass or Pyrex because other materials could affect the flavour of your juice.

Vape Coils FAQs

Are Vape Coils Important?

Vape coils are arguably the most important part of your vaping device. They're what heats the e-juice, turning it into the vapour that you inhale and exhale. So yes, they're a very important piece of vaping hardware!

How Long Do Vape Coils Last?

Coil life depends on how frequently you vape and which e-liquids you use. If you vape every day and have a higher VG e-liquid in your tank, your coils will likely last a few days. If you don't vape as often and stick to PG-heavy liquids, your coils may last a few weeks or more!
